Applying for jobs within health promotion

Applying for jobs within health promotion

Postby crystal.andvik on Wed Mar 17, 2010 10:11 am

When searching for a job one of the most important tools is a CV or résumé. This is the first thing employers see when evaluating who the candidate is and what they have to offer. There are so many ways to write a CV/résumé and it is vital to know when to use either or.

Many health promoters seeking a career/employment are also required to submit a CV/résumé. Knowing what to include and how to format it can be complicated. The field of health promotion is vast and with guidance from expertise we can each build our own CV/résumé to stand out from the rest.

The purpose of this working group is to answer questions like: what types of jobs are you are interested in applying for after training in health promotion? And, how should a CV/résumé be written depending on the type of job applying for?

Receiving input from IUHPE members who are in positions where they hire people and/or have influence on employment processes can be very beneficial. For example, giving advice to applicants generally and more specifically when it comes to CVs and résumés and how can the knowledge developed through the project on core competencies for health promoters be used to enrich the job applications of health promoters?

With tools and advice from expertise who are well established in the field of health promotion, students and early career health promoters will be able to build a personal portfolio of education, publications, and experience to present that first impression to future employers.

We invite both experienced health promoters and people in early phases of their careers to share their questions, experiences and advice through this discussion.

Great that this stream is coming up!

I think maybe we should start by suggesting the areas in which we consider applying for jobs - or know health promoters working - to create a list of positions which might require different approaches in an application process.

So, my little contribution for a start, is:

A teaching position within academia, at a University.

So, keep the list growing!

Best wishes,
Torill Bull (PhD student, Norway).

One area is aid work with NGOs in developing countries. This includes

-foundations like: The Gates Foundation
-emergency relief like: Mercy Corps, Kirkens Nødhjelp, NORCAP
-other NGOs doing projects short/long term like: PATH, World Relief, Norsk Folkehjelp, etc.

Another area includes:
Health promoting schools and nutrition

Yes. this is a great topic. Thank you for posting it!
I'm currently working on a health promotion school project, and together with some colleagues (I'm a medical doctor) we succedeed to make our department of Preventive Medicine and schools to cooperate among each other.

Another area for the list may be: Chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus.

With a basic education as a nurse, I would also like to suggest the area of applying for clinical jobs with an additional education as a health promoter. And of administrative jobs within health care systems.

Dear All, forgive me as i am new to all this, but this is extremely pertinant to me.

After 12 years in the pharmaceutical industry i have seen the light! I am currently doing an international health promotion MA at the university of brighton but am going to start looking for part time work at NGOs like Terrance Higgins Trust, The hepatitis C trust and of course internation programmes. The trouble is my CV is geared towards the pharma industry and i have no idea how to show off my old and new skills to their best.

could anyone offer advice.

Best Wishes

Dear Torill,

Thank you for your reply, I have a biomedical science degree, 12 years as a sales rep for biotech and pharma companys and now have just passed my first MA module - foundations of heath promotion.

I have a specific interest in HIV and sexual health and my first module essay was concentrating on HIV cultural risk perception and Health Promotion.

I am still working for GSK at the moment and doing my MA part time, and we have just started a group project looking at Sexual health education in schhols, comparing the UK and Denmark. I would like to gain some experience working for an NGO part time, while i finish my MA.

Funnily enough today i have made some progress with helping out on the Everywhere project which is HIV and health promotion for MSM.

In addition i have been looking at the Hepatitis C trust, and been in contact with their volunteer coordinator. They are doing a project to try and educate general practitioners and nurses about risk factors and reduction in stigma.

So things are slowly happening, but i would finally like to make the break with the pharma industry, which obviously requires some income. Hence the CV.

So any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Best Wishes to all

The way I see it, you would be in a great position for getting jobs of the kind you are interested in after you have completed your Ma education! You have a varied competence, and long experience. I will give you my initial reactions, but I am still not in the group of people with experience in employing people, so take it for what it is.

I think your cover letter would be the place to emphasize the new competence you get through your health promotion education. The technicalities would of course go in the CV, but in the cover letter/application letter you can make a point of how the hp education complements your previous education and experience. What you should focus on in the cover letter, I think, is the competencies and approaches you have been trained in as a health promoter. You can mention the approach of working closely with the community in question, assessing needs, creating cooperation, participation, planning and evaluating programs and progress, etc. All of this will be of great value in any NGO. I will also suggest you read the IUHPE documents on 'core competencies' in health promotion - there is actually a lot going on in that field now which may be of great help for us as newly educated health promoters. Take a look at this link, where you find a collection of resources in that regard: http://www.iuhpe.org/index.html?page=614&lang=en

I would also encourage you to keep an eye on this dialogue. As it develops, we will get in advice from employees and personnel specialists, to help us taylor our applications for various types of jobs.

And finally: if you are not a member of ISECN, I would encourage you to join this network for the student and early career sector of IUHPE. To join you need to be a member of IUHPE, but ISECN membership is free once you are an IUHPE member. To join IUHPE, visit http://www.iuhpe.org, and find the right links in the menu across the top of the page. If you decides to join, send me an email and I will put you on the ISECN listserv (Torill.Bull@iuh.uib.no). It will give you inspiration and build your professional network, which is important at this stage of our careers.

Good luck!
